Here are some tips for getting the best growing results.
  • Prepare the soil
Choose an area with well-drained soil that gets full sun. Remove weeds and large stones by raking or tilling the soil. You can also use a systemic weed killer. Wildflowers prefer low-quality soil, so don't use compost or fertilizer.
  • Plant the seeds
Sow the seeds in the spring or fall, following the package instructions. Some seeds may need to be soaked in water before planting. To ensure good seed-to-soil contact, you can mix the seeds with damp sand and broadcast them. Then, lightly rake the seeds into the soil, being careful not to cover them too deeply. You can also compress the seeds into the soil with your hands to help with germination and anchor the roots.
  • Water
After planting, water the seeds with a light mist to settle them into the soil. Keep the soil moist for a couple of weeks until the seeds germinate.
  • Maintain
Thin out plants that are growing too close together and regularly remove weeds. You can also cover the seeds or seedlings with burlap or row covers to protect them from rain. Once the seeds have good roots, most wildflowers will be drought tolerant. Seedlings should emerge in 2–3 weeks, and the first flowers should bloom in 6–10 weeks.
