Here are some tips for growing Shasta daisies from seed:
-
When to plantSow seeds in the spring when the soil is at least 70°F, or early indoors 8 weeks before the last frost.
-
Where to plantShasta daisies need full sun or at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Plant in a sunny spot with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. You can mix compost into the soil and add fish and bone meal to encourage more blooms.
-
How to plantSow seeds thinly and evenly, about 1/8 inch deep. Don't bury them completely, as they need light to germinate. You can gently press the seeds into the soil, mist them with water, and cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture.
-
After plantingKeep the soil moist, but water regularly only when it feels dry. Once seedlings emerge, thin them out so that only the strongest and healthiest plants remain. When the seedlings have roots, water them from the bottom to avoid damping off.
-
Other tipsFor longer-lasting plants with more blooms, you can regularly remove spent flowers, a process called deadheading. If you live in a snowy area, you can cut the plants down to the base and cover them with mulch after the flowering season ends.
Shasta daisies grown from seed will usually flower in their second growing season.
